This reminds me of an industrial engine that my uncle showed me at the power plant he maintains. The critical fasteners on that engine were hollow tubes with precision ground rods inside of them that let you measure the stretch of each bolt, and the appropriate torque for each fastener was based on the linear pull of each fastener and not the rotational force that it took to tighten it.
