I was looking at the buildbotics controller, has a lot of handy features although pretty pricey. Haven’t convinced myself not to buy it but havent pulled the trigger yet either. I looked at the black box controllers I do think it would do the job just fine in reality. I do like the idea of chucking the pc and going stand alone though.
I got away from fusion, got good at Inkscape and now working on blender. I was thinking about picking up a Corel cad package but haven’t pulled the trigger on that yet either, educational licenses are like 169 bucks or something if I can convince the wife she “needs” it for school 😁. Too many projects in process now... and I’m going back to school full time in May. WGU has offers a bachelors degree in 6 months if you can finish it... so that’s immediate priority starting May 1st.

I think i would rather see a some sort of laser tracking measurement than a mechanical encoder. how would a 45 degree miter work on something like this?

No i never heard of that one before, but it's pretty cool. The linear torque conversion seems like it would be really strenuous on the reciprocator at first glance but not all that different than a crank shaft i guess. I wonder if it would work on a smaller scale as an electric motor....?
