Dan, can we use rotary encoders to sense filament movement? like the ones on the LCD panel.
Watching this video seems like it could work
they are cheap and would be easy to mount up, one to shaft of stepper that drives hob feed roller and another as a pinch wheel driven before filament enters extruder. the video uses this one www.sparkfun.com/products/10596 but any one would work I think.?

Although I don't think it is going to "prevent" a failed print. Even if it detects a problem and shuts the printer down or whatever, the print is still FAILED.
Some things are meant to be closed. Your mind isn't one of them.
