Steve showed me a nice and simple probe finger that is probably part of the auto calibrate. Hinges down between nozzle and bed to make a simple switch. The plastic part has copper foil liner to make electrical contact.
may be convenient, but really should not be needed if your machine is sturdy, precise and stable. calibrate once and your done.
That might just be easy enough to try this weekend. I've been holding off because I didn't want to take my hot-end of to install the dial indicator. Now I can just rig up a probe and keep it all assembled while it calibrates.
I didn't get to ask Steve about his probe, I asked Andy and JJ about it and they didn't sound very excited about it.

I finally did this calibration, and after 4 passes I've got all 6 points (each tower and each in-between point) between -.01 and +.01 millimeters! I think that's a first for me, I might be able to start printing big things!
There's some XY scaling that this alters slightly, but the next revision is supposed to account for this. It also is set up to use a z-probe and there's currently an executable that runs the routine for you. There's also talk of baking it into Repetier firmware and making it more automatic.
I guess I've got to figure out what I want to do for a probe next.

Part of my problem might have been S3D... I didn't realize until this evening that it sets the initial layer height to 50%... Swapped it to more like 150% (.3mm for me, usually) and I'm doing much better.
Still not perfect, but way better than I've had it before.
