They each have their uses. Like Jim said, wick is best for SMT, but the smaller the area the smaller the wick needs to be or you will be heating the wick forever, it wicks the heat just as good. Hot air rework is best for removing SMTs as you need to heat all the pins at once but you can end up blowing the part into oblivion.
Solder suckers are great for Through hole, but invest in a good one. Best solution for through hole is a 120psi air nozzle - Get the solder molten and blast it - nice and clean. Just be sure you point the nozzle in a direction you don't mind splattering with molten solder.
Some things are meant to be closed. Your mind isn't one of them.
