I agree, a DRO on the mini mill would be extremely useful, but not hacked caliper(s) ...you can get a mill DRO with X, Y & Z readout and scales fairly cheap.
If we want a "project" it can be done even cheaper, there is a Android app that uses a old tablet or smart phone for readout & logic, then you just buy some inexpensive magnetic scales.
Doing the Arduino thing would involve way more time and could end up costing just as much or more as there would always be something to add to it. The one from ebay makes the most amount of sense I think, thanks for finding it. I can get decent calipers for around $25 each which would be $75 total and we would be limited to 6". Its only a few dollars more for the set from ebay complete and ready to go. Except the AC adapter is an extra $18 each or we replace batteries, I'll pay for those if we can raise the money to buy the set.

I have a single one of these readouts for my saw that I cut the carbon fiber tubing with. Going to be a digital length stop. Have not got it installed yet, so I will bring it to the hive Thursday so you guys can see it. It is pretty nice, has all the brackets and mounting hardware.
Batteries are cheap on Amazon, they last a long time in a calipers anyways. Don't see the need for a power supply.
We only need $60 more, That is about $180.00 worth of sales on our store site. SO pick a few things from the store , I'm sure everyone has other forums you belong to.
