In my searching for motor solutions for the South Bend lathe, a guy online tipped me off to a solution he's been working on. Apparently they sell large (.75hp+) speed controllable servo motors for industrial sewing machines, and if you can invent your own bracket, they're a great affordable way to put a speed controllable motor into a project like a lathe. $120 is about what a cheap Harbor Freight motor costs, or what you'd pay for a VFD, so for a motor and controller it's an awesome deal.

The 1936 motor is a 1/4hp, and the 1958 one that came on it is 1/2hp, so that's not out of range at all... The (latest) used one I'm eyeballing is 3/4hp.
