Rebecca saw a segment on the news tonight about this guy modifying electric ride on toy cars for use as a wheelchair for disabled children. Wow this is a awesome thing to do. I watched it also, it was so inspiring. This guy is one cool maker. He modifies them according to the child's particular disability, like the little girl who has trouble holding her head up, hers has a big button behind her head so she must hold her head up to make car go... SO she is getting physical therapy while she 'plays' how cool is that! Did a little google search and found this info... www.udel.edu/gobabygo/ www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news/disabled-children-get-custom-cars-purpose-n97566 www.facebook.com/UDGoBabyGo www.nationswell.com/babiesdrivingracecars/
Phil, do you know of places locally us makers at the Hive could do something like this?
Yes, through ADEC. I had a meeting last week with the new Director of Day Services & Assistive Technology, Don Wierenga and he is excited to do more with the MakerHive. Through ADEC we can have get the access needed to clients and projects.
Phil what happens if you make something for adec and that client gets injured from a device you made where does the liability start? with adec or you personally. I know that nothing would be done to intentionally injure anyone but that thought is always in the back of my mind with all the stupid lawsuits you see now.
I've seen my fair share of Liability suits when working at Royale Coach. One of the Lawyers I talked to put it plain and simple -
In a law suit we will name anyone and everyone involved. It's like darts - throw a bunch and see which ones stick. The ones that get stuck are usually somewhere in the middle. The little guy doesn't have any money to pay out and the big guys have better lawyers.

It ends with ADEC in my case. I am subcontracted by ADEC, so anything implemented has to be approved before installed for End-Use. All projects are also approved before start. They are also client's of ADEC's so there is approval on the guardian's side for liability and such.
In general you also should have business insurance. Zion has 1 million dollars worth.
Well in our case it's best to just go through ADEC. Don't complicate it.
Don's response on this thread.
"Phil, That is awesome! I’m going to get with our Family Services director and see if she has kids who would benefit from this. I’ll plan to get back with you to let you know either way. Thanks!
It looks like we might have some clients who would benefit from this. I plan to look into it some more. The liability questions are good so that is something else I can follow up on. We want people to feel comfortable helping those we serve at ADEC. Is the Makerhive it's own entity? Like an LLC?

Right now it's a DBA of of my Company Royale Phoenix Inc. But I intend to make it an LLC soon. (I was supposed to do that last week but SQUIRREL!)
