Does anyone know of a local (within an hour drive or so) place to buy basic electronics components other than RadioShack? I really hate spending more for shipping than what the handful of parts I need cost, and I can't afford to just order a bunch of stuff I may or may not ever use.
Looking for a BTA24-600CW or similar MCU direct triggerable Triac for a super stripped down motor speed controller I'm wanting to try. It's a $2 part, but shipping is like $6!
I often order from Mouser, usually about once a month. I'm getting ready to place another soon. If your not in a real big hurry for it I can order one for you with my order.
For some things you can try Grainger, They have a lot of switches, relays, thermistor etc type stuff but not things like MOSFETs and TRIACs. There located off SR 19 South of Elkhart.
Some things are meant to be closed. Your mind isn't one of them.
If you will be placing an order soon, I have a short list of parts I need, that being one of them. We could pool the order to cut shipping costs.
I was hoping someone might know of somewhere around here to get common passive and discrete components besides RadioShack's extremely limited selection. I have a short attention span. If I have to wait a week for parts to show up for a small project I randomly thought up, I tend to never actually get around to building it.... I would love to be able to just stock up on whatever random electronics bits and bobs struck my fancy and have a giant stock on hand to build things with when I think something up, but I don't have that kind of spare income
Right now I had an idea for a universal motor speed controller using all of about six components. The only thing I don't have handy is the Triac. I do however have a 25A zero-cross SSR laying around I may try to use in place of it though.

Just today I went to the Radio Shack close to me to get a part, and they are out of business! crap. just as well their selection was even more pitiful than most. and the staff/service was crappy and plain rude. I am suprised they survived this long.
Made me think again about a business opportunity for a local "Maker" store with all kinds of electronic and mechanical parts and building materials. I think it could work. Maybe even sell used "junk" for the parts hacking.
Is there a Fry's store close? I went to one in AZ... WOW unbeliveable parts source.

I've been contemplating the same thing for a while now. Even Hardware, Menard's and Lowe's are a joke. I think if we had a huge selection, and with internet sales it could go very well. I've been collecting "junk" for a long time, it's shame to throw the stuff out knowing that someone could make something cool with it.

I'm game. We'd have a significant amount of competition online from the likes of Sparkfun, Adafruit, Seed Studio, iTead Studio, etc though. I can provide a large amount of e-junk from the scrap printers here. Motors, power supplies, boards to salvage components off of (including pricy parts like FPGAs and such).
A lot of the basics can be purchased pretty cheap from China if you order in a decent quantity. Shipping is usually what kills you though.
I'll get them Thursday. How much do I owe you? I'm going to try to have a PCB ready to go by then so I can get the prototype knocked out and start debugging the firmware

$4.82, I got extras too in case you need more.
