I like the magnetic arm idea. That's very similar to what I've been scheming about.

@jim. How well would that work in a CNC operation with torque and resistance against the material you are cutting. Would the number of magnetics allow the proper "adhesion" for the effector?

You would have to cut really slow I think to prevent the balls from getting pulled loose. The Delta isn't a good design I don't think for milling as you can't get the "push" you need for hard materials. Foam and soft woods would probably be OK.

I can't imagine that the magnets would hold up to any real pressure. I bet you could engrave, but cutting doesn't seem possible.

It's just another printer with add on attachments. I think I might just put the 500 into building my own.

For $499, I'd strongly consider buying it to have a more portable machine. After you spend $180 on a Rambo, $50 on an LCD controller, $50-100 on a hot-end, motors, belts, pulleys, etc... You're at or above $500 anyway. Those are probably nicer parts than this one uses, but still. That's less than half of an Orion. The $500 ballpark has traditionally been PrintrBots, having a Delta in that playing field is exciting. 

The different design has a few things that appeal to me also, seeing a fresh machine would be interesting. I like the OOTBF auto-leveling, the laser is cool, etc.

If I can get it for $499, I just might do it.

If they included the laser at that point I might back it too. I see a lot of the comments mention it. I want to build a smaller sturdier machine, something like Brian's Nemesis. It's also not clear if the scanner comes with the 499 point either. Not heated bed either.

They've surpassed $1M in pledges and unlocked all of their stretch goals. *If* they ship everybody will get a gyro chip in the print head to detect and adapt accel and jerk settings, a pen holder module, and now they're supposed to replace BlueTooth connectivity with internal WiFi and offer a cloud printing service...

Now the gyro sounds interesting. Wonder if one can be made to put on the Rostock. It should show very subtle movements in the print head and maybe I can finally figure out what my banding is coming from. If you print a concentric ring for example, the print head should be in the same location each layer, a gyro/accel would show if it is not.

I have a serial one, will see if I can get it on my print platform. If I can get it small enough I could put one directly onto my hotend board --- oh the wheels are turning...







edit: not so sure the pen holder "saves you time"

Man, the Gyro thing sounds REALLY interesting. Let's give it a try on the Rostock.
Are there small and cheap gyros available to hook to a arduino ?

I also think this could give me some valuable data on vibrations on the platform that show up in the Nemesis prints. I have been trying to chase those down and eliminate as much as possible for smoother prints, but have no way of measuring mods to tell if it helps any. (like the stepper motor harmonic balancing wheels I made)
