There are gads of tube headphone amps out there. The DIY part of it is what makes it fun though, I'd rather build one than buy one. Definitely a cool project though!
Products like this can definitely add that tube flavor to your music, but it won't make up for compression loss in digital formats. Analog sources will still sound the best (records and tape), followed by SACD, regular CD, and last and worst is MP3.
MP3 is 12:1 compression over CD quality sound, so imagine writing something important (like RotoMaak assembly instructions) and removing 11 letters from it in between each letter that you keep...

My 5 disc changer on my stereo system crapped out (in fact I have it here at the Hive) and I was surprised to see that Best Buy still carried them. Almost everything now is Smart phone adaptable or some form of digital MP3. The guy I was talking to was 23 years old and had just listened to a Vinyl record for the first time the previous weekend. He was blown away by the sound quality, he thought nothing could be better than MP3's LOL. He thought all technology advanced and improved but he sees now it's not always a good thing.
Some things are meant to be closed. Your mind isn't one of them.
I don't understand why all of this couldn't be done "in app" from a smart phone. It's all software anyways right? Seems like a Rube Goldberg approach just to sell atoms.
Neil Young is educating "the youth" on those who have never listened to music other than from compressed mp3. Like looking at the world in mostly grey colors.
