LOL, yes it is kind-of pointless as any processor would work just as well and printing faster is not always "better" You could print too fast and the material not have time to melt properly.
I think their goal is to muscle in on an Open source part of the 3D printing world and close it. What I found most interesting is the second sentence,
We previously covered the company’s software that prohibits a given 3D printer from printing a gun design.
If the company is large enough - which I think it is - they could easily lobby congress to "require" such chip+software in all 3D printers to prevent guns from being printed = big $$$ for them.
Some how we need to think of a way to convince the world that these 3D printers are no more a threat than Alvin and the chipmunks on a drive-by.
Some things are meant to be closed. Your mind isn't one of them.
