I was playing around with RockSim and trying to create a rocket for a 3D printer. I made a very simple design. I went to save the model as a STL file but it didn't create a stl file. RockSim does list 8 different types of files that it is supposed to be able to save but only 6 of the 8 actually worked. Here are the types of files Wave Front mtl VRML wrl Open Inventor iv Geomview oogl X3D x3d POV pov and the two that don't seem to work are the RenderMan rib and STL stl So do any of the other file types work on a 3D printer or can any of them be converted to a STL file?
Larry, I think just the short amount I look at Rock sim with you it should export directly as a .stl that we can print. If you are going to be there thursday lets look into it farther.
It looked like it should export directly as an stl but when I did export it to a folder, the folder was empty every time I tried it. I sent a RockSim email to Apogee Components for them to figure why it failed. Maybe they can figure out the problem.

Here I have attached two images of a rocket nose cone that I wanted to print on a 3D printer. The first image is a 3D image from RockSim and it looks like the part I would want to make. The second image is the image that RockSim exported as a WaveFront mtl.obj file. It might be possible to convert the mtl.obj file to an STL file, but I think that there is a definite problem with the exported file. But I will let someone with more experience try to see if anything can be done with this.
