I think the filament had a bad pellet in the mix or some other inconsistency problem. I pulled a weirder than normal looking plug out of the hot-end, cut off about a foot and heated it up to try again... There was some kind of obstruction in the orifice of the nozzle so I had back-pressure for a second, then whatever it was pushed through and about an inch of filament shot out in a soupy kind of way. It actually hit the bed and cooled in water droplet shapes. And then everything was back to normal when what had been in the hot-end was purged by the fresh filament.
Weird.
This is the first 'real' problem that I've had with the cheap $20 HatchBox PLA filament. Not too bad after running 8 or 9 spools of the stuff through it.
