EL lighting is really cool, While spraying it on is relatively new, EL has been around for a long time. One main reason it's not very popular is it's longevity - or should I say lack there of. We used it for years to back light switch panels on the buses, but depending on how often they were turned on, they would start to lose their glow after few short years. (we were replacing the dash panel ones quite often). The Transformers were another issue, they would go bad quickly or produce an audible whine. That made a lot of customers take needless trips to the ear doctor thinking their hearing aid was faulty. . Although the science page reads "long lasting" they don't really specify how long. Humidity is also a huge factor on it's life, one tiny unsealed spot will allow enough moisture to begin to degrade the color and even discolor the luminescent when off. It actually starts to mold.
With that said, this stuff is great for certain applications, but I don't recommend using it to back light switch panels or anything that you want to shine noticeably bright after a long period, and in this case - it's not like you can simply change the panel, you have to repaint.
