I think the change meant that the source code just wasn't open anymore. It's still free, for now, they're just trying to keep their intellectual property private. Probably a move to poise themselves for sale or merge with a larger company.
They now "require" a "Voluntary" donation to download it. I went ahead and donated the one time $10.00. Parts of it has been cleaned up, other parts are the same. It's a bit more responsive and Slicer setting seem to open a lot quicker than before. A lot nicer manual control interface.
Some things are meant to be closed. Your mind isn't one of them.
